Brocéliande is a legendary enchanted forest that had a reputation in the medieval European imagination as a place of magic and mystery. Brocéliande is featured in several medieval texts, mostly related to the Arthurian legend and the characters of Merlin, Morgan le Fay, Lady of the Lake, and some of the Knights of the Round Table. It first appeared in literature in the Roman de Rou chronicle by Wace in 1160 and today is most commonly identified as Paimpont forest in Brittany, France.
We came on our trip from the Britangne to Brocéliande. I had read already a lot about Merlin, King Arthur, and the Holy Grail. I found it astonishing that a place of Merlin was here in France. But seemingly the legend crossed the canal and have their roots on both sides.
Brocéliande is a mysterious forest. One can still hear the spirits of the past whisper. We encountered a golden tree in the forest, shining in the morning son. This tree was embellished by local artists to remind all visitors of the old legends of this area. Another important place in Broceliande is the tomb of Merlin. The legend says that Merlin, the magician, was enchanted by the young beautiful lady Viviane who was one of the powerful women of Avalon. So he sleeps there in the other world. Maybe one day when his help in need he will come back to this world like King Arthur also. The presence of Merlin is felt like a sleeping giant who holds all things in this wide arms in peace even he is in deep sleep. There is furthermore the Castle of Viviane with the lake where Athurs´s sword was thrown into after the last battle against his illegitimate son Mordred. Besides this castle, there are lots of activities about the middle ages and the Knights of the round table. The round table was a symbol of the whole world but also the table of Christ. The stories of the noble knights were describing a culture when the people were in service to each other and helped others to find the way. It was also a memory of the Great Mother
We were attracted by strange buts and got red spots on our skin. But fortunately, we met a shaman in the town on the lake. He gave us homoepathic medicine that heals us immediately. Also, there was a great beer to drink. We walked around the whole lake. We could always feel the depts of the forest with its strange beings and spirits. The past is alive and the Holy Grail is somewhere waiting for someone who is ready. It is inside anyway, but the forest encourages us to listen to our heart.
